Packer is well-known for his landmark book, Knowing Godwhich first was published in This idea contradicts every example we have in the Scriptures, and even contradicts things he Mr. It all sounds a bit glass-half-empty at the moment, but let me spoil the end of the review for you now; you should definitely read this book! Packer fully delivers on the promise to deal with the questions, and in doing so he faithfully and powerfully represents the biblical gospel.

Went from a 4-star to a 5-star. As a general rule, I dislike it when people start off a book or sermon by telling me what it is not going to be about. The evangellism question that concerns the book is pretty much contained within its title.

The great strength of this style is the end result; as the truths of Scripture are put forward, you become convinced by the sheer reasonableness of the argument. For a book weighing in at a mere pages, this one contains impressive depth and contains a thorough and satisfying treatment of the subject. It’s easy to lose sight of the importance of evangelism and forget that Christians should be enterprising in their evangelism, always considering better ways to pakcer their neighbors through the method. Wrestling with some questions and this book is sovereigtny helpful about a Christian believer’s role in light of the doctrine of God’s sovereign control over everything.
However, the book cripples its own argument by an odd insistence that the truths of God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility form an insoluble antinomy in Scripture.

He humbly shows that Scripture, far from being contradictory, reveals truth that is sometimes irreconcilable for finite beings to exhaustively comprehend.
This has quickly become one of my favorite books. Packer does a good job dealing with the relation between evangelism and aand sovereignty of God, namely, that God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility do not conflict, but complement each other despite the antinomy they createand that God’s sovereignty gives us our only hope in evangelism.
