When Alma finally appears, he and she are both confused, although at first Leo believes that she is his Alma from the past and that she is really just in his imagination.

He promised her he would never love another girl as long as he lived. Refresh and try again. Alma is a brilliant humorous uubirii of an adolescent girl who has lost her father and is dealing with a grief-stricken mother and a traumatised younger brother. Her mother becomes distant and lonely, escaping into her work of book translation. Krauss offers no easy answers, or even any definite ones.
I admire Alma Singer for her efforts to keep the memory of her father alive, re-reading kdauss books on survival in the wilderness and on edible plants, inventing stories about him to tell to her small brother, pestering her grieving mother to rebuilt her life. I am very glad I read this after the holiday season; otherwise I admit that I may have gotten lost through the intricate weaving of the niicole of this story.
