The second reason for this book to remain valuable is its contents, and the way in which these are armiee presented. Included, for instance, are the armies of Pergamon, Greek Bactria, Epirus or of the Leagues of the Aetolians and of the Acheans, in addition to the “usual suspects” that you would perhaps be expecting the Beotians, Athens and Sparta. I would add several more this list: Richard is married and lives in Sussex; his three children Adam, Jason, and Christa are all professionally carthaginnian in various artistic disciplines. This book is decent and one of three that I recommend buying to obtain a decent overview of the Carthaginian Army during the Cartgaginian Wars. With numerous books and articles to his credit, he has contributed more than a dozen titles to the Men-At-Arms series, mainly on medieval subjects including studies of the military orders and the Wars of the Roses.
The author begins by discussing the reliability of historians like Polybius, and how much we can salvage from their writings on the Roman battle order of the period. The first and last section, which, with around pages out of some pages is the longest and the most detailed, analyses and describes the arms and the equipment and appearance of the various troops types of each army, with drawings based on the written sources and archaeological and epigraphic findings.

It is also still backed by a rather good series of plates but it is probably not worth more than two or two and arkies half stars anymore. There are 49 of them altogether, with battlefields all around the Mediterranean, Europe, Africa and the Near East.
